Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
August 13, 2026
Across the country, hundreds of projects to improve grid reliability and make electricity more affordable face an uncertain future—the result of the Trump administration's actions that have slowed the outflow of billions of dollars of DOE funds to a trickle. According to an April report from the DOE Alumni Network, a group of former agency employees, the DOE has announced the termination of 356 awards totaling $12.5 billion since January 2025, and has threatened to terminate 303 additional awards worth $12.2 billion. Read more
A joint research team from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), in collaboration with Chung-Ang University, has created a new chemical adsorption heat pump that turns low-temperature waste heat directly into cooling power. KIMM engineered the heat pump to harness lukewarm exhaust from factories and data centers. On the other hand, Chung-Ang University created a noise- and vibration-free electrochemical compressor. Read more

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., is introducing what he calls a “data center bill of rights” as voters nationwide recoil from potential utility rate hikes by the facilities that power artificial intelligence. Across higher education, institutions are confronting a new reality: many legacy campus environments were never designed to support today’s diverse ways of learning, processing and engaging. As the percentage of students identifying as neurodivergent climbs toward one in five, what was once treated as a specialized conversation around accommodation has become a far broader strategic issue, one centered on how the built environment shapes cognition, stress, belonging and ultimately student success.
