Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
July 2, 2026
HVAC industry groups ACCA, HARDI and PHCC recently announced that they’ve filed a legal challenge to an EPA rule finalized in late May, arguing that parts violate the law and threaten to "destabilize the refrigerant market." The EPA’s rule removed the deadline for installing most residential and light commercial R-410A systems; however, it also pushed back deadlines by which certain commercial refrigeration equipment must transition away from high-GWP refrigerants. While the industry applauded the removal of the R-410A deadline, associations warned that allowing high-GWP commercial refrigeration equipment to continue to be sold while the associated refrigerants are being phased down will raise refrigerant prices across the industry. Read more
With the U.S. facing an electricity affordability crisis and demand rising quickly, experts say the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s order to system operators to provide transmission for flexible large loads underscores the need to implement data center load flexibility. Just a 1% to 2% reduction in data center peak demand can reduce electricity rates 0.5% to 2.8% and protect reliability, according to a new study. Additionally, analysis from the Electric Power Research Institute shows how flexibility that can get data centers interconnected faster is withing reach. Read more

As heatwaves intensify across Europe, most cities are reaching for a familiar fix of more air conditioning. But in 1990s Paris, planning began for a different kind of solution: one of the world’s largest district cooling networks.
The system has 75 miles of underground pipes distributing chilled water to museums, offices, hospitals, schools and other buildings including the Louvre, the Grand Palais and some luxury hotels. Instead of thousands of individual air conditioning units, cooling is produced centrally and shared across the city like a utility. Read more

The desire for one Montreal structure to achieve Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) certification from the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) immediately laid the foundations for an effective project. This ambitious goal forced the entire team to adopt a design approach in which reducing loads at source was prioritized before treating residual loads with renewable and efficient energy. In terms of annual energy cost, the proposed building presents an annual saving of 52.3% compared to the ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010 reference building, excluding the contribution of PV panels. ASHRAE has installed its 2026–27 Society president, Sarah E. Maston, along with newly elected officers and directors, during its 2026 Annual Conference in Austin, Texas. In her inaugural presidential address, Maston introduced the theme for the 2026-27 Society Year, “Changing the Game: Retrofitting for Resilience.” The theme focuses on how the building industry can work together to develop a winning “game plan” to improve the efficiency, performance and resilience of existing buildings in the face of growing climate and infrastructure challenges. Read more

Air conditioners hum through millions of homes, yet cooling energy demand is often treated as a fixed cost of comfort. Consumers assume the future will look much like today with a slightly bigger bill, and the models governments use to plan for a warmer world do the same, freezing the weather at decades-old temperatures. A research team from Peking University decided to thaw those frozen weather stats. They fed updated temperature projections into a global model that ties building energy use to outdoor weather, revealing a substantial gap between actual and prior forecasted cooling energy demand. Read more
