When Rafael Aguire Rodriguez walked across the stage at Amarillo College this spring, the 82-year-old raised his HVAC certificate in triumph. Rodriguez first earned an associate's degree in applied science and mechanical engineering technology from Amarillo College in 1995. Nearly three decades later, he returned to study HVAC, earning multiple certificates over the past academic year, including HVAC assistant and HVAC technician. Read more

| Divya Tyagi, a Penn State graduate student studying aerospace engineering, refined a century-old math problem into a simpler, more elegant form, making it easier to use and explore. Tyagi's research, published in Wind Energy Science, expanded research in aerodynamics, unlocking new possibilities in wind turbine design that Hermann Glauert, a British aerodynamicist and the original author, did not consider. People have been telling stories about renewable energy since the first all-solar-powered house opened on the campus of the University of Delaware in 1973, but, even though we’ve gotten used to seeing solar panels and wind turbines across the landscape in the intervening 50 years, we continue to think of what they produce as “alternative energy,” a supplement to the fossil-fuelled power that has run Western economies for over two centuries. In the past two years, however, with surprisingly little notice, renewable energy has suddenly become the obvious, mainstream, cost-efficient choice around the world. Read more

By Gheorghe Mihalache, Ph.D., P.Eng.
The cheese company Bel Group constructed in 2016 a new industrial facility in Sorel, Québec that minimizes energy use by improved milk pasteurization and energy recycling. The location choice for the cheese plant, near an existing cheese and yogurt plant, offered a unique opportunity to combine its mechanical infrastructure of cooling (chillers) and heating (heat pumps, hot water and steam boilers) with the adjacent facility. Using electric vehicle (EV) batteries to power households could save their owners thousands of dollars in bills while cutting emissions from the power grid, according to new research from the University of Michigan and Ford Motor Company. The team investigated scenarios related to vehicle-to-home charging, or V2H. This emerging technology is similar to using EVs that are parked in garages as generators, but instead of burning gasoline, they provide electricity from their batteries that have been charged by the grid.
