Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
July 30, 2026
A coalition of 18 states, along with Washington, D.C., and New York City, sued the EPA over a rule issued in May, arguing that it weakens regulations meant to phase down HFCs in the U.S.—and violates the law. Read more

Retailers are now seeking to intervene in the consolidated challenges to an EPA rule. The Retail Litigation Center (RLC), together with Food Marketplace Inc (FMI), the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI), and the National Grocers Association (NGA) have filed a motion defending the rule’s extended compliance deadlines. Conventional building energy management systems typically rely on discrete-time control methods and simulation-dependent strategies, which often fall short in capturing the continuous and nonlinear dynamics of multi-zone building environments. To address these pitfalls, a novel continuous-time reinforcement learning framework has been developed to enhance energy efficiency, comfort and sustainability in multi-zone building management systems. Hang Seng Bank Headquarters is a 1991 commercial building with 30 floors and a total internal floor area and gross floor area of about 33 227 m2 (357,652 ft2) and 34 161 m2 (367,706 ft2), respectively. To pursue Hang Seng Bank’s 2030 electricity reduction target of 30% in its ESG program, one of the various initiatives is air-conditioning optimization. It is recommended to adopt an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) data analytics system (DAS) as one way to optimize the operational efficiency of the existing headquarters building’s air-conditioning system. Download here

ASHRAE announced a strategic direction for the development of future editions of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. As part of the 90.1 Standing Standard Project Committee’s 2028 and 2031 six-year work plan, Standard 90.1 will maintain its primary focus on energy efficiency and energy cost justified requirements consistent with its purpose since the 1970s. This direction reflects strong industry stakeholder feedback and reinforces the standard’s historical role as a widely adopted and enforceable benchmark for commercial building energy performance. A new study published in Nature Climate Change uses the Copernicus Climate Change Service's (C3S) ERA5-HEAT dataset to provide a comprehensive global-scale analysis of how heat stress has evolved since 1950. Using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), the study shows that hazardous heat is becoming more frequent, more intense and more widespread, with hotter nights, longer heat stress seasons and increasing numbers of people exposed to hazardous heat. Read more
