Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
March 19, 2026
The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced a $1.9 billion funding opportunity aimed at reconductoring transmission lines and installing advanced technologies to expand the capacity of the existing power grid system. The Speed to Power through Accelerated Reconductoring and other Key Advanced Transmission Technology Upgrades, or SPARK, funding opportunity has an application deadline in May with project selections anticipated in August, and it is a rebranding of the Biden-era Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program. Read more
In a 2021 coalition agreement, the German government decided that new heating systems installed in residences should operate using 65% renewable energies instead of gas or oil. Attitudes are more negative than positive when it comes to these facilities’ impact on the environment, home energy costs and quality of life nearby. In turn, larger shares of Americans view their economic effects as mostly positive than negative. Read more
Researchers from the Texas Center for Superconductivity and the department of physics at the University of Houston have broken the temperature record for superconductivity at ambient pressure—a breakthrough that could eventually lead to more efficient ways to generate, transmit and store energy. The team achieved a transition temperature (Tc) of 151 K (-122 °C) under ambient pressure, which is the highest ever recorded for all superconductors at ambient pressure since the discovery of superconductivity in 1911. Read more
