Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
February 26, 2026
A bipartisan bill introduced in the House seeks to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) in commercial buildings by giving owners tax credits for assessing the IAQ of their facilities and upgrading their HVAC and air filter systems. Titled the Airborne Act, it offers two incentives: a tax credit worth $1 per square foot for conducting property IAQ assessment and one for meeting either ASHRAE Standard 62.1 or ASHRAE Standard 241. Read more
Last week, the Oregon Building Code Division’s Residential and Manufactured Structures Board voted to approve updates to the state’s residential energy code, including a requirement that new homes be built with heat pumps instead of ducted air conditioning. An analysis conducted by the Building Code Division found that the changes will save residents an average of $125 per month and over $1,700 per year on energy bills. Read more

Data centers are quickly becoming the next big political issue. Major political figures on both sides have struggled to figure out their positions, and in-depth results from a new poll help explain why: Americans don’t know much about data centers, they don’t really know how to feel about them and they’re not yet sure where the political battle lines lie. A bipartisan majority of Americans said they expect data centers to become a campaign issue in their area eventually, the poll found, with nearly half saying it would become one within the next five years. Read more
Geothermal policy is once again catching up to geothermal ambition, with major gains in energy abundance on the cusp of a breakthrough from new technologies being pioneered in the Western U.S. Whether they succeed will depend in part on whether startup companies can break through market-entry barriers. A new bipartisan House bill, aptly dubbed the Hot Rock Act, could be the boost to make it happen. Read more

Almost since inception, data centers have been cooled by air. However, in recent years, liquid cooling has become a new, game-changing trend in data center operations, challenging the market when it comes to energy efficiency. This column discusses the ins and outs of liquid cooling and what metrics may be used to compare the efficiency of liquid versus air cooling in data center applications. Download here

Dogs are dynamic contributors to the indoor environment, yet their impact on air quality remains largely unexplored, warranting a comprehensive assessment of their pollutant emissions. A study characterized chemical, particulate and microbial emissions from small and big dogs. Big dogs emitted CO2, NH3, fungi and bacteria at considerably higher rates than small dogs, whereas their emissions of 1 μm –10 μm particles were similar. Read more
