Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
February 19, 2026
An international research group led by Slovenia’s University of Ljubljana has reviewed emerging solid-state and gas-cycle heat pumps capable of reaching temperatures of up to 1,600 K (2,420°F), assessing their challenges, applications, scalability and technology readiness levels. The researchers say these systems could outperform conventional high-temperature heating technologies by achieving coefficients of performance above 1. Read more
Dogs are dynamic contributors to the indoor environment, yet their impact on air quality remains largely unexplored, warranting a comprehensive assessment of their pollutant emissions. A study characterized chemical, particulate and microbial emissions from small and big dogs. Big dogs emitted CO2, NH3, fungi and bacteria at considerably higher rates than small dogs, whereas their emissions of 1 μm –10 μm particles were similar. Read more

Researchers at Kanazawa University have developed a next-generation building energy evaluation model that combines rule-based symbolic AI computing with virtual reality (VR) technology. This model enables real-time visualization and simultaneous evaluation of the energy-saving effects and indoor thermal comfort during the design stage of a zero-energy building. Read more
Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) substitute gases have been linked, in a new study, to most of the forever chemical settling into rain and Arctic ice. Rainwater samples and Arctic ice cores have recorded rising levels of the same pollutant year after year. By comparing those records with air data, researchers at Lancaster University traced the fallout to refrigerants and anesthetics and found that the amount of this chemical falling in rain and snow each year rose about 3.5-fold over the study period. Read more

The deadline to submit proposals for ASHRAE’s 6th Building Decarbonization Conference is Feb. 27. This year’s conference will be held in Seattle, Washington from Sept. 23-25 and the theme is: “Decarbonization That Delivers: From Policy to Projects to Performance.” The conference will be an information and idea exchange between stakeholders in the built environment industry concerning the improvement of energy efficiency, health, comfort and reduction of GHG emissions in new and existing buildings and systems. You are invited to submit proposals for panel and seminar sessions (60 or 90 minutes). This conference is accepting abstracts only for full sessions. Read more

In Case You Missed It
As Winter Storm Fern swept across the United States in late January 2026, bringing ice, snow and freezing temperatures, it left more than a million people without power, mostly in the Southeast. Scrambling to meet higher than average demand, PJM, the nonprofit company that operates the grid serving much of the mid-Atlantic U.S., asked for federal permission to generate more power. Energy Secretary Chris Wright took another step, authorizing PJM, ERCOT and Duke Energy to tell data centers and other large power-consuming businesses to turn on their backup generators. Read more
