Five New England states launched a $450 million effort to warm more of the homes in the often-frigid region with energy-efficient, low-emission heat pumps instead by burning fossil fuels. The New England Heat Pump Accelerator is a collaboration between Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The goal: Get more heat pumps into more homes through a combination of financial incentives, educational outreach and workforce development. Read more
Researchers at UBC Okanagan are examining a new air-cleaning device designed to capture airborne pathogens. The standard method for reducing infectious disease transmission involves upgrading a building's ventilation system to manage airflow throughout large areas. Their new design takes a unique approach by guiding airflow around the user and continuously drawing contaminated particles into a localized purification area. Read more

At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, delegates are weighing a paradox at the heart of climate innovation: how to harness powerful tools like artificial intelligence and advanced cooling systems without deepening the very crisis they aim to solve. AI is already helping farmers predict droughts and manage crops more efficiently, but the environmental cost of training large models and running vast data centers is raising alarms. Meanwhile, cooling remains one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Read more
