A recent poll quizzed more than 7,000 respondents about their attitudes and knowledge surrounding heat pumps—a low-carbon replacement for fossil fuel heating like gas boilers or oil. Awareness of heat pumps has soared (89%) in the UK among those who don’t have a heat pump in their home, but the survey highlights some differences between men and women. Read more
With heat waves among Europe's deadliest climate hazards, a team of scientists led by Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change has developed a prediction system capable of providing weather information four to seven weeks before summer. Trained on data from centuries of climate analysis up to recent years, the machine learning system has demonstrated an increase in forecast efficiency by drastically reducing the computational resources required. Read more
Researchers at the University of Sydney and start-up Dewpoint Innovations have developed a nanoengineered polymer paint-like coating that can passively cool buildings and capture water directly from the air—all without energy input. The project team created a porous polymer coating that reflects up to 97% of sunlight and radiates heat into the air, keeping surfaces up to 6° cooler than the surrounding air even under direct sun. Read more
