The U.S. has formed a $1 billion partnership with Advanced Micro Devices to construct two supercomputers that will tackle large scientific problems ranging from nuclear power to cancer treatments to national security. The U.S. is building the two machines to ensure the country has enough supercomputers to run increasingly complex experiments that require harnessing enormous amounts of data-crunching capability. Scientists from the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory and Duke University jointly with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore developed a new type of filter capable of capturing carbon dioxide directly from ambient air. Different from cumbersome energy-intensive industrial units, such filter may be embedded into a standard ventilation system of the apartment block or office building. Thereby, each building potentially may become an element of the distributed network removing CO₂ from ambient air. Read more

The global economy runs on two invisible currents: water and energy. Most companies still manage them as separate problems—a costly oversight as droughts, grid strain and data-center expansion collide. A new study argues that we are overlooking the very infrastructure that could underpin the transition and warns that the water sector already consumes around 4% of global electricity and that demand could more than double by 2040 if nothing changes. As building smart control systems increasingly rely on data-driven methods, the term “data-driven smart buildings” becomes more commonly adopted. The data collected for these systems rely on a larger context: what is measured, for which rooms/zones, for what purpose? This data is called “metadata,” and are available in several ways in a building operation system. Download here
