Shaping Tomorrow's Global Built Environment Today
September 11, 2025
Rep. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa. recently reintroduced bipartisan legislation aimed at protecting students, teachers and others from poor indoor air quality by expanding the role of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act, first introduced in July 2024, would require a nationwide assessment of indoor air quality in schools and childcare facilities and provide tools to improve IAQ conditions in these buildings. Read more

Heat keeps pushing people indoors, raising electric bills and straining power grids. A new fabric created for cooling suggests there is another way to stay comfortable without flipping on the air conditioner. Researchers at the University of Chicago report a fabric that stayed about 4.1°F (-15.5°C) cooler than a sports cooling textile, and about 16°F (-8.9°C) cooler than silk under full sun. Read more
Researchers at Rice University have developed a method that can increase the amount of electricity recovered from data center waste heat by 60% to 80% annually. The findings are relevant as data centers currently consume hundreds of terawatt-hours of electricity each year, with demand growing alongside the expansion of AI and cloud computing. The research modeled the system’s performance in two US data center hubs, indicating a 60% increase in electricity recovery in Ashburn, Virginia, and an 80% increase in Los Angeles. Read more
On a recent sunny morning in a channel at the Port of Los Angeles, seven blue steel structures that look like small boats are lowered into the ocean one by one. Attached to an unused wharf on a site that once housed oil tanks, they gently bob up and down with the waves to generate renewable power. Here, a pilot program will generate just a small amount of electricity that can be used locally, but the larger goal is to prove the technology works well enough to expand along 8 miles of breakwater at the port—enough to power up to 60,000 homes. Read more

As the commercial building industry continues to seek guidance on mitigating the negative carbon impact of buildings on the environment, a growing focus exists on resource-efficient decarbonization: an incremental methodology, coupled with integrated design and strategic capital planning, to create a path toward efficiently decarbonizing buildings. By reconfiguring HVAC systems to address both operational and embodied carbon emissions, significant energy savings can be achieved while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. This article looks at the use of hydronic systems to help meet these goals. Download here

Scientists from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University have developed innovative systems for cooling gas-turbine blades based on nature-inspired gyroid lattice structures. They were created using additive technology—layered laser alloyage of metal powders. In the course of their study, the researchers used the 3D printer to print out samples of channels with gyroid insertion elements and tested them in aerodynamic installation. Read more
