Major tech companies such as Amazon and Microsoft are, quite literally, power-hungry. The staggering amount of electricity required to fuel artificial intelligence and the data centers behind them has driven these companies to such extreme measures that they are attempting to bring retired nuclear power plants back to life. As the race to build computer capacity for artificial intelligence heats up, this spike in electricity demand raises unique challenges as it is on track to far outpace the growth in energy supply. A once-overlooked technology that taps into the Earth's heat to generate electricity could supply up to 20% of the electricity in the United States by 2050, according to a new Princeton analysis. Published in Joule, the study found that if the costs of deploying enhanced geothermal systems fall as more of the technology is implemented—following trends observed in other energy technologies—then it could emerge as the third-most significant clean energy technology behind wind and solar. People have been telling stories about renewable energy since the first all-solar-powered house opened on the campus of the University of Delaware in 1973, but, even though we’ve gotten used to seeing solar panels and wind turbines across the landscape in the intervening 50 years, we continue to think of what they produce as “alternative energy,” a supplement to the fossil-fuelled power that has run Western economies for over two centuries. In the past two years, however, with surprisingly little notice, renewable energy has suddenly become the obvious, mainstream, cost-efficient choice around the world. Read more

A study from the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research has revealed wood-burning and eco stoves release high concentrations of toxic pollutants such as ultrafine particles, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon and carbon monoxide. Researchers monitored the indoor air quality in five homes in that used a range of heating stoves and clean solid fuels, including seasoned wood, kiln-dried wood, wood briquette and smokeless coal. ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.2-2018, Energy-Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings, recently adopted requirements to limit operational carbon emissions in homes and multifamily dwelling units. Through reliance on RESNET/ICC 301-2022, Standard 90.2-2018 standard has established a consequential carbon accounting methodology that supports life-cycle analysis of operational CO2e emissions, encouraging residential decarbonization. ASHRAE will host the Conference for Integrated Design, Constructions and Operation in Denver, Colo., from Aug. 13-15. First, Carl Elefante, author of "Going For Zero: Decarbonizing the Built Environment on the Path to Our Urban Future," offers a viewpoint informed by his experience in the industry, prioritizing the stewardship of existing buildings and applying the lessons embedded in built heritage. Then, 2024-25 ASHRAE Presidential Member Dennis Knight will moderate the “Building Performance Analysis in the Age of AI” panel as panelists explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the construction, operation and optimization of buildings. Airborne transmission of respiratory pathogens in indoor environments remains a significant global health challenge. While existing research broadly addresses ventilation effectiveness, there is a critical need to understand how specific diffuser placements influence early-phase aerosol dispersion immediately following a cough event. A new study by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport uses Computational Fluid Dynamics and the Discrete Phase Model to analyze initial droplet transport, evaporation and nuclei concentration under different air distribution configurations.
