Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
July 10, 2025
Airborne transmission of respiratory pathogens in indoor environments remains a significant global health challenge. While existing research broadly addresses ventilation effectiveness, there is a critical need to understand how specific diffuser placements influence early-phase aerosol dispersion immediately following a cough event. A new study by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport uses Computational Fluid Dynamics and the Discrete Phase Model to analyze initial droplet transport, evaporation and nuclei concentration under different air distribution configurations. Read more
U.S. Pres. Donald Trump on July 7 directed federal agencies to strengthen provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that repeal or modify tax credits for solar and wind energy projects. In an executive order, Trump said the renewable energy resources were unreliable, expensive, displaced more dependable energy sources, were dependent on foreign-controlled supply chains and were harmful to the environment and electric grid. Read more

A breakthrough in material design developed through machine learning and artificial intelligence, published in the journal Nature, promises to transform how we manage and utilize energy for cooling and heating. Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin, in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the National University of Singapore and Umea University in Sweden, have developed more than 1,500 new thermal meta-emitters. These advanced materials have the potential to make significant strides in energy efficiency. Read more

Although ducted systems remain prevalent in North America, ductless multisplit systems are emerging as an option. For hot-humid and mixed-humid climate zones, humidity control is as important for comfort as space temperature control. This feature presents results of the comparison of a zoned traditional ducted variable speed heat pump and a multisplit heat pump in a test home located in U.S. Climate Zone 3. Download here

In their Annual Energy Outlook 2025 Reference case, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projected the electricity consumed for commercial computing will increase faster than any other end use in buildings. Computing accounted for an estimated 8% of commercial sector electricity consumption in 2024 and grows to 20% by 2050. Ultimately, more electricity could be consumed by computing than for any other end use in the commercial sector, including lighting, space cooling and ventilation. Read more
