Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
June 19, 2025
Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new cooling technology that could significantly improve the energy efficiency of data centers and high-powered electronics. The technology features a specially engineered fiber membrane that passively removes heat through evaporation. It offers a promising alternative to traditional cooling systems like fans, heat sinks and liquid pumps. Read more
In the early 2000s, as U.S. troops navigated the harsh landscapes of Iraq and Afghanistan, the price of delivering a gallon of fuel to a forward operating base skyrocketed to more than $400 to $600. Supply lines transporting fuel were increasingly targeted, resulting in casualties and operational disruptions. Faced with these pressing tactical and logistical challenges, the Pentagon realized that the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels posed a direct threat to national security. Read more

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed eliminating greenhouse gas emissions limits for power plants as well as repealing a toughening of the mercury and air toxics standard for coal- and oil-fired generators. The EPA estimates that its proposal to repeal Obama and Biden era GHG rules would save the power sector $19 billion over 20 years and reverting to the 2012 MATS rule would save $1.2 billion over a decade. Read more
Researchers in Sweden have analyzed the impact of a hybrid heating system combining heat pumps and district heating on five real buildings. Their study evaluated the efficiency of five multi-family buildings using hybrid systems that combine exhaust air heat pumps with district heating. The analysis showed that residents were able to save up to €2,768 ($3,159) compared to a scenario without source coupling. Read more

Demand-control ventilation (DCV) systems can help reduce the high energy demands and operating costs of HVAC systems for laboratories by selectively increasing the supply airflow rate only when required under critical events such as an accidental spill or leakage of chemicals, rather than operating labs constantly under high air change rates. This study, with the help of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, evaluates the impact of DCV on the environmental conditions in a laboratory under an accidental spill scenario. Download here

ASHRAE and the International Code Council have announced the opening of a second public review period for proposed Standard 240P – Quantification of Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Buildings. The draft standard is available for public comment from June 6, 2025, through July 21, 2025. Standard 240P is designed to establish a consistent methodology for quantifying both embodied and operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the entire life cycle of buildings and their sites. Read more

Honeywell, Samsung E&A, Johnson Matthey and Gidara Energy have joined together to create a strategic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology group. The four companies, organized as the SAF Technology Alliance, aim to create a new technology offering to help scale and deliver a full-service SAF production chain to take the fuel from a waste feedstock to a final product. This alliance will look to scale the use of gasification and the Fischer-Tropsch process—a chemical reaction that makes synthesis gas—in SAF production in the near term. Read more
