Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
May 29, 2025
Researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK have demonstrated the feasibility of residential ice-source heat pumps in cold climates and densely populated areas. They designed a heat pump system that uses existing gas pipelines to transport water. Read more
The multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package passed by House Republicans repeals or phases out clean energy tax credits passed in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act during President Biden’s term while supporting increased mining, drilling and other traditional energy production. A marathon session that stretched from last Wednesday to last Thursday resulted in 1,100-plus page legislation that curbs billions of dollars in spending across food assistance, student loans, Medicaid and action to address climate change. Read more

Hot Air Podcast: Understanding Mold Problems Inside Housing With George Tsongas
ASHRAE Journal

The objectives were clearly expressed: to design an efficient house that would offer occupants an environment with thermal, visual and acoustical comfort, high indoor air quality and energy efficiency, within a defined construction and life-cycle budget. This 2,400 ft2 (223 m2) net positive house project also had the objective to minimize embodied carbon and be net zero or have net positive energy. The design criteria was not to meet the minimum code performance, but rather to design a house that would be in accordance with the codes at its midlife, which was chosen to be 25 years. The U.S. heating and cooling industry is highly dependent on overseas manufacturers, both for fully assembled units and for component parts. The U.S. imported more than $15 billion in AC units last year, mainly from Mexico and China. Last week, the Trump administration paused its 145% tariff on China and replaced it with a 30% tariff in the meantime. Now, contractors are reeling from the whiplash of an uncertain manufacturing outlook and dealing with higher expenses across the board due to limited supply. Read more
