Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
May 22, 2025
The U.S. heating and cooling industry is highly dependent on overseas manufacturers, both for fully assembled units and for component parts. The U.S. imported more than $15 billion in AC units last year, mainly from Mexico and China. Last week, the Trump administration paused its 145% tariff on China and replaced it with a 30% tariff in the meantime. Now, contractors are reeling from the whiplash of an uncertain manufacturing outlook and dealing with higher expenses across the board due to limited supply. Read more
The U.S. grid is flooded with data center proposals that will never get built, making it difficult for utilities and grid operators to plan for the future. Last year, RAND Corporation’s “upper confidence” forecast projected 347 GW of AI-sector power consumption by 2030, while Schneider Electric called that prediction “extreme” in a whitepaper on AI’s potential grid impacts last month, which cited forecasts under 100 GW from other reputable observers. The divergence in AI power demand forecasts hints at a fundamental challenge facing utilities, grid operators and power system regulators today: speculative load interconnection requests. Read more

As reported in the Journal of Photonics for Energy, researchers recently developed a theoretical system that links a thermoradiative diode with a heat engine, forming a self-sustaining setup that can release more heat than previously thought possible. This approach could allow for more effective cooling without relying on constant electricity from external sources. Read more
The Trump administration said on Thursday it will audit $15 billion in grants to power grid and manufacturing supply chain projects awarded during the Biden administration. President Trump has championed domestic production of oil, natural gas and coal while halting construction of an offshore wind farm and easing regulations on fossil fuels. Read more
ASHRAE Journal
By Christopher Scheck, P.E.
Each update to ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 has lowered the threshold at which exhaust air energy recovery (EAER) is required in connection with outdoor air systems. In some instances, conventional EAER may not be practical, either because the exhaust air is dirty, or there isn’t enough exhaust air, or the exhaust airstream is too far away from the outdoor airstream. This article reviews Standard 90.1 requirements for hydronic series energy recovery, provides practical guidance on equipment selection and reports on measured performance. Download here

Congress is working on a big tax bill and there is a provision in the legislation that would harm ASHRAE. Specifically, the provision would levy a 21% tax on the royalties ASHRAE receives from the AHR Expo, which would cost ASHRAE about $1.5 million in lost revenues annually. This loss would curtail ASHRAE’s ability to serve its members, advance technical and scientific knowledge, and offer professional development and training opportunities. ASHRAE needs your help to remove this harmful provision. You can do this by sending a pre-written email to your elected officials in the House and Senate. Read more
