Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
May 1, 2025
The UK and the International Energy Agency gathered ministers and high-level officials from 60 countries to Lancaster House in London for two days of talks on the future of energy security this week. The EU was out in force, the US sent a top official, and China stayed away. Read more
Researchers in Italy have designed a novel carbon dioxide heat pump that can work with photovoltaic-thermal energy, a finned coil heat exchanger and a U-tube borehole heat exchanger. Their experiment has shown that the simultaneous use of at least two energy sources always results in improved system performance even with limited heat transfer areas. Read more

A trio of University of Miami researchers placed sensors in nearly 60 residences across Miami-Dade County, discovering many instances in which indoor temperatures were hotter than those outside, as residents struggled to pay the high cost of cooling their homes. The researchers studied 57 households, recording temperature and humidity readings inside living quarters that included single-family homes, apartments and condos. Read more
With AI driving rapid growth in global data center infrastructure, the requirements to cool those facilities is emerging as a financial, operational and reputational risk. Most new large-scale facilities rely on water-based cooling systems, which are more efficient for high-density computing but can significantly increase total water consumption. Read more

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are an energy-efficient method of matching system output to the load. Energy engineers often estimate the power draw of a VFD-driven system using the full load (100% speed) power draw and the estimated or actual operating speed. This article offers guidance on the equations to use when developing those calculations and aims to clarify the differences between the speed-to-power and flow-to-power exponent values. Download here

In Case You Missed It
The U.S. government's energy statistics arm is set to lose over 100 employees after the Trump administration's latest round of resignation offers, putting at risk some of the most closely watched energy reports globally. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes weekly, monthly and annual data on oil and gas output, crude and fuel inventories, and price forecasts, all used by traders and energy companies as indicators of supply and demand. The reports often move global oil prices. Read more
