A federal judge issued an order last week blocking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s freeze order on Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grants, finding that the EPA did not provide sufficient evidence of waste, fraud or abuse. The case was brought before U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Tanya Chutkan on March 8 by the Climate United Fund (CUF), the recipient of a $6.97 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grant which was frozen Feb. 18 after the EPA issued a notice of termination regarding the $20 billion GGRF fund. A growing number of countries are working to decarbonize buildings, but sluggish progress and financing put global climate goals at risk. These are the key findings of an annual review of the buildings and construction sector, published recently by the UN Environment Programme and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction. The Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2024-2025 - Not just another brick in the wall highlights progress made on related global climate goals and calls for greater ambition on six challenges, including building energy codes, renewable energy and financing. A team of researchers at Saarland University and the Center for Mechatronics and Automation Technology in Germany has unveiled an innovative air conditioning technology that promises significant energy savings and environmental benefits. The system can cool and heat without using volatile refrigerants or burning fossil fuels by exploiting the “elastocaloric effect” in nickel-titanium shape memory alloys. Read more

The number of data centers operated by hyperscale providers increased to 1,136 last year, up from 992 at the end of 2023, according to research published last week by Synergy Research Group (SRG). The companies with the broadest data center footprint are the leading cloud providers — Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Together, the three now account for 59% of all hyperscale data center capacity, SRG said. Read more

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin announced two weeks ago nearly three dozen deregulatory moves that he said would spur the U.S. economy by rolling back rules that have affected the industry. Many of the moves would affect landmark regulations aimed at protecting clean air and water. The regulatory changes announced by Zeldin are sweeping, potentially affecting the reconsideration of power plant emissions standards, toxic emission limits on power plants, wastewater rules for coal and other power plants and the use of hydrofluorocarbons.
