Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
March 20, 2025
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin on Wednesday announced nearly three dozen deregulatory moves that he said would spur the U.S. economy by rolling back rules that have affected the industry. Many of the moves would affect landmark regulations aimed at protecting clean air and water. The regulatory changes announced by Zeldin are sweeping, potentially affecting the reconsideration of power plant emissions standards, toxic emission limits on power plants, wastewater rules for coal and other power plants and the use of hydrofluorocarbons. Read more
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have achieved a remarkable breakthrough in cooling technology with the world’s first kilowatt-scale elastocaloric cooling device. As demands for air conditioning surge and cooling already account for 20% of global electricity consumption, this innovation, capable of bringing indoor temperatures to a comfortable 70°F–72°F (21°C–22°C) in just 15 minutes, holds promise in alleviating energy strain and the detrimental impacts of high-GWP refrigerants. Read more

A transformative shift toward renewable energy is underway in Nevada as the Escape Solar and Storage project promises to deliver clean power to prominent Las Vegas Strip resorts. Located just north of Las Vegas, the facility will encompass 900 acres and feature approximately 389,000 bifacial photovoltaic panels. The project will boast a capacity of 185 megawatts of solar power coupled with 400 megawatt-hours of Tesla battery storage. Read more
Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder and University of Pavia in Italy investigated the impact of professional HVAC cleaning on building energy efficiency and indoor air quality across multiple climate zones. Results from the study showed that cleaning HVAC ducts and coils can reduce fan and blower energy consumption by 41%-60% while increasing supply airflow by up to 46%. Read more

In Case You Missed It
The Trump administration has withdrawn the U.S. from a global agreement under which the developed nations most responsible for the climate crisis pledged to partly compensate developing countries for irreversible harms caused by global heating. The loss and damage fund was agreed at the COP28 UN climate summit in late 2023 after years of diplomatic and grassroots advocacy by developing nations that bear the brunt of the climate crisis despite having contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions. Read more
