Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
March 6, 2025
Declaring a state of emergency, California Gov. Gavin Newsom suspended two state environmental laws to expedite measures he said were needed to protect communities against wildfires. Newsom suspended the California Environmental Quality Act and the California Coastal Act as the two-month anniversary of the Palisades and Eaton fires approaches. The moves come as Newsom asks Congress for nearly $40 billion in aid for fire recovery and also follows President Trump's criticism of the state’s wildfire management. Read more
Divya Tyagi, a Penn State graduate student studying aerospace engineering, refined a century-old math problem into a simpler, more elegant form, making it easier to use and explore. Tyagi's research, published in Wind Energy Science, expanded research in aerodynamics, unlocking new possibilities in wind turbine design that Hermann Glauert, a British aerodynamicist and the original author, did not consider. Read more

U.S. manufacturers rely on over 30,000 small industrial boilers to make foods, paper, clothes, electronics, transportation equipment and much more. Only about 5% of process heat in industry currently comes from electricity, but industrial heat pumps are gaining momentum. To identify opportunities to clean up air quality, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy mapped areas where ozone levels exceed the U.S. EPA standard, the number of small industrial boilers in each area and the fuel they use. Read more
A team of scientists at the University of New South Wales has discovered that some of the most important new refrigerants partially break down into persistent greenhouse gas pollutants, including compounds that have been banned internationally. Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) have emerged as the leading synthetic chemicals for refrigerants and are considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to their predecessors, but the research has demonstrated that HFOs break down into a small amount of fluoroform, suggesting the need to more closely examine HFOs’ environmental impact. Read more
Liquid Cooling in Data Centers ASHRAE Journal Podcast
Wildfires have ravaged and devastated portions of California. ASHRAE recently released Guideline 44-2024, which is new guidance to mitigate the impact of smoke on indoor air quality. Join host Journal Editor Drew Champlin live from the 2025 AHR Expo as he speaks with guests Abdel Darwich, Michael Gallagher and Randy Cooper on the effects of wildfire smoke and how to manage IAQ.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will delay the implementation of seven of the Biden-Harris administration’s mandates on home appliances. These actions postpone the efficiency standards for the following home appliance rules: central air conditioners, walk-in coolers and freezers, gas instantaneous water heaters, commercial refrigeration equipment, air compressors, and more. The DOE is creating a new energy efficiency category for natural gas tankless water heaters. Read more
