Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
February 27, 2025
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will delay the implementation of seven of the Biden-Harris administration’s mandates on home appliances. These actions postpone the efficiency standards for the following home appliance rules: central air conditioners, walk-in coolers and freezers, gas instantaneous water heaters, commercial refrigeration equipment, air compressors, and more. The DOE is creating a new energy efficiency category for natural gas tankless water heaters. Read more
Bioaerosol emissions during toilet flushing are an often-overlooked source of potential health risks in shared public facilities. A new study from the Society for Risk Analysis found that bioaerosol concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) exceeded acceptable levels established by the Centers for Disease Control after toilet flushing. The research was conducted in two restrooms located in an office building in China, measuring the emissions of bioaerosols containing S. aureus and E. coli under various flushing conditions and ventilation scenarios. Read more

When extreme weather and natural disasters such as wildfires and hurricanes descend on a region, the immediate concern is typically damage from the event itself, but the power outages that often accompany such events can be dangerous as well. A new study published in PLOS Climate is among the first to parse how different kinds of extreme events affect the power grid in the United States. Read more
A research team from the Zhongyuan University of Technology in China has designed a photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) integrated air-source heat pump hot water system that uses a phase change tank to lower energy consumption and achieve higher power generation performance than conventional heat pumps. The system is designed to use water as a working medium and to provide circulation power for forced circulation. Read more
