Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
November 21, 2024
Meeting the world's data storage demands is costly in terms of money, energy and environmental impact—but a new material, created by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Sichuan University in China, could improve the cooling of our data centers while also making home and business electronics more efficient. Current cooling solutions typically add up to about 40% of overall data center energy use (around 8 terawatt-hours every year), while the researchers' new organic thermal interface material (TIM) could shave off around 13% of those 8 terawatt-hours. Read more
The TIM developed here is a colloidal mixture of the liquid metal galinstan and particles of aluminum nitride, combined in a way that creates a gradient interface – one that helps heat pass through without any hard boundaries between the two substances.
Kingston Secondary School in Canada will have its automatic HVAC system inspected next week following the publication of a student-written article that found the concentration of carbon dioxide in the school exceeded safe levels. Hazel Taylor-Quick, a grade 12 student at the school, had heard that people were complaining about shortness of breath and having headaches, so she wanted to see if there was any connection to the quality of the air inside the school, prompting her to write an article called “Bad Air: KSS’s Unsafe Atmosphere." Read more
A shift toward installing electric heat pumps for the entire house instead of individual rooms in Maine is paying off so far with a sharp rise in consumer interest. Efficiency Maine Trust gave more rebates for whole-home heat pumps in three months this summer than it did during the previous nine months, the Trust's Executive Director Michael Stoddard said. Read more
The Xiangjiaba-Shanghai transmission link, which went into service in 2010, is one of China's first ultra-high-voltage (UHV) projects—a technology designed to deliver electricity over long distances. It spearheaded an era that would see the country build a vast network of UHV infrastructure, dubbed the "bullet trains for power," to send electricity generated from hydro and coal in remote regions to populous cities. Read more
Performing arts patrons don't usually think about HVAC design when deciding to attend an event. But if the system designers don't notice, patrons might. Join Technical Editor Rebecca Matyasovski and Coral Pais in this chat on how acoustics were considered when designing HVAC systems for a Cleveland performing arts center. This article appears in the November 2024 issue of ASHRAE Journal.

Nov. 25, 2024 is the deadline to submit papers for the IEQ 2025 conference, co-organized by ASHRAE and AIVC, to be held Sept. 24-26, 2025, in Montreal, Canada. This conference expands upon the research and discussion of the former IAQ conferences. The theme of the conference is “Rising to New Challenges: Connecting IEQ to a Sustainable Future” and focuses on the growing understanding of occupant response to various indoor environmental elements while enhancing resilience in a changing climate. Short abstract submissions are due Nov. 25, 2024. If accepted, complete manuscript submissions are due March 10, 2025. For more information including paper/seminar topics and author benefits or to submit an abstract, visit ashrae.org/IEQ2025.
