New research from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology shows that personal care products, such as soaps and cosmetics, can significantly impact indoor air quality. They release over 200 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air when used. When these VOCs mix with ozone, they can create new compounds and particles that may reach deep into our lungs. Scientists are still unsure about the effects of regularly inhaling these particles on respiratory health. Read more
Amazon announced that it was investing in small nuclear reactors, just two days after a similar announcement by Google, as both tech giants seek new sources of carbon-free electricity to meet surging demand from data centers and artificial intelligence. The International Energy Agency forecasts that data centers’ total electricity consumption could reach more than 1,000 terawatt hours in 2026, more than doubling from 2022. Nuclear energy provides a solution that doesn't emit the greenhouse gases that come from power plants that burn fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and gas. Read more

President Joe Biden on Sunday toured areas of Florida ravaged by the back-to-back hurricanes and announced federal funding for projects to strengthen the electrical grid and a "whole government" effort to help the state recover. Biden also announced $612 million for six Department of Energy projects in the Southeast. Two of the projects are focused in Florida and provide a combined $94 million in federal funds, according to the White House. Read more

Researchers at the Distance University of Madrid in Spain investigated the possibility of efficiently using the airflows generated by HVAC systems as a man-made wind resource. The team decided on a vertical wind turbine generator after examining the wind flow pattern because of its small size, light weight and nominal power of 9 kW, making it perfect for installation on HVAC systems. Results showed that the concept, tested at a data center in Colombia, can produce about 468 MWh per year from a single location. Read more
