Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today

For the first time, Texas passed California to become the top solar state in the country. The American Clean Power Association, which represents over 800 energy storage, wind, utility-scale solar, transmission and clean hydrogen companies, found that Texas is home to 21,932 MW of capacity. Their quarterly market report found that, by adding 3,293 MW of new solar year-to-date, Texas has the most utility-scale solar capacity installed, comprising 20% of the overall U.S. solar fleet. Read more
As the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) creates ever bigger energy demands, it’s getting hard for the industry to hide the true costs of the data centers powering the tech revolution. According to a Guardian analysis, from 2020 to 2022 the real emissions from the “in-house” or company-owned data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple are likely about 662%–or 7.62 times–higher than officially reported. The International Energy Agency stated that data centers already accounted for 1% to 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2022, before the AI boom began with ChatGPT’s launch at the end of that year. Read more
A group of researchers from the University of Glasgow and the University of Liverpool have presented an experimental flexible heat pump that can carry out a defrosting operation while avoiding a reduction of heat supply when the refrigerant condenses in the frosted evaporator. The novelty of the proposed approach consists of the evaporator being defrosted by condensing the refrigerant inside. Read more

As COVID-19, flu, and RSV persist, providing clean air in buildings has become even more critical. ASHRAE Standard 241-2023: Control of Infectious Aerosols, continues to empower building owners, operators and professionals to proactively reduce risks for occupants during peak virus seasons. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality and Standard 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Residential Buildings are also key resources for tackling poor indoor air quality (IAQ) in both commercial and residential buildings, impacting health, comfort and productivity. Read more

In Case You Missed It
The Korea Energy Research Institute has developed, for the first time in the country, a refrigeration technology that uses air as a refrigerant instead of freon gas, hydrofluorocarbons and other refrigerants that cause global warming. Researchers have successfully developed an ultra-high-speed integrated compression and expansion system using advanced design technology. The system is capable of cooling down to -100°C (-148°F), so it is expected to have wide applications in semiconductor processes, biotechnology, pharmaceutical storage and more. Read more
