Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
September 5, 2024
Finland's capital city is installing the world's largest heat pump to reach the city’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. The air-to-water heat pump will warm around 30,000 homes and can operate in temperatures as low as –20°C (–4°F). The plant is expected to start providing heat at the end of 2026. Read more

The North Carolina home, nicknamed the "Hobbitat," was built in 1978 with sustainability in mind, featuring eco-friendly elements such as glass walls, a 48-foot skylight spanning the entire interior and a solar attic. The mountain dwelling is unique in that it's primarily underground, boosting the home's energy efficiency since the earth's natural insulation reduces the need for air conditioning and heating. Read more

Google is considering building a large data center in Vietnam, which would be the first of its kind built by a big U.S. technology company in the Southeast Asian nation. The "hyperscale" data center would be located close to Ho Chi Minh City, the country's southern economic hub, and could be operational as soon as 2027.  Read more

Most U.S. homes still use noncondensing units with an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of ~80%, rather than efficient condensing furnaces. This article discusses a low-cost acidic gas reduction (AGR) catalyst technology that enables a novel condensing natural gas furnace with an ultraclean (i.e., nearly zero) flue gas and neutral condensate that is environmentally friendly. In Case You Missed It
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced a five-year investment of $104 million in four new NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERCs), focused on tackling the carbon challenge, expanding physical capabilities using robotics, making heating and cooling more sustainable and enabling the U.S. supply and manufacturing of natural rubber. One of these centers, the NSF ERC for Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH), aims to create a transformative, sustainable refrigerant life cycle to reduce global warming from refrigerants while increasing the energy efficiency of heating, ventilation and cooling. Earlier in the year, ASHRAE supported a successful bid from the University of Kansas (KU) for EARTH, and KU will receive $26 million in funding. Read more
