Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
August 22, 2024
Engineers at Tsinghua University have made a nuclear safety breakthrough by shutting off power to the cooling systems of two large-scale nuclear reactors and showing their design can't meltdown because it passively cools itself. Conventional nuclear reactors require power to release water or CO2 used as coolant to combat the heat produced by radioactive fuel. The researchers developed a cooling system design using a helium-cooled pebble bed reactor that naturally circulates the heat through uranium "pebbles" coated in carbon. Read more
Researchers at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) have tackled indoor air quality by developing the Aerosol Removing Tapestry (ART), a device that removes airborne particles and bacteria in the room underneath an artistic mesh fabric "canvas." After evaluating indoor spaces at the university, cluster team members will use the information to test different ART sizes and locations, monitoring its effect on air quality in the room. Read more

In Case You Missed It
In the suburbs of northeast Paris, there is a giant terra-cotta-colored warehouse with a labyrinth of windowless corridors inside. This summer, a deafening whir emanated from behind rows and rows of anonymous gray doors and under white striplights, disposable earbuds were available to protect passersby from the noise. These were the uncanny innards of one of France’s newest data centers, completed earlier this year, which was being used to heat the new Olympic Aquatics Center—visible from the data center’s roof. Read more
