This article spotlights the first African American man to be inducted into the ASHRAE College of Fellows, mechanical engineer David Nelson Crosthwait Jr., who was awarded 39 U.S. and 80 international HVAC-related patents and authored chapters in the 1939, 1959 and 1967 ASHRAE Handbooks. Read more

Built in Melbourne, Fla., the American Muscle Car Museum runs on 100% renewable energy and is designed to protect its 380+ new and vintage automobiles from hurricane category 5+ damage. The steel-reinforced concrete block structure can withstand winds of 300 mph (483 kmh). Windows are rated to withstand winds of 225 mph (362 kmh), and the garage doors—the weak link—are rated to withstand 160 mph (258 kmh). The owner chose to decouple temperature and humidity in the design of the museum; two 30 ton (105 kW) dehumidifiers to maintain RH at 35% were installed, as were 140 ton (492 kW) air-conditioning units for temperature control. If the units cannot sufficiently maintain a temperature of 75°F (24°C), the facility is designed to allow the temperature to float up. Read more

The Building Innovation Hub, an organization focused on helping building industry professionals in the Washington, D.C. area create and operate high-performing buildings, has new resources available that reference ASHRAE. The Hub’s website includes a new sample scope of work for retro-commissioning, which is intended for use by properties seeking to improve building performance. This scope of work is based on ASHRAE Guideline 0.2-2015, Commissioning Process for Existing Systems and Assemblies, and ASHRAE/IES Standard 202, The Commissioning Process Requirements for New Buildings and New Systems. For most building types, retro-commissioning is either the first or second most cost-effective measure to reduce operational energy use. The free downloadable guide and other resources can be found on the Building Innovation Hub website here.
