Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today
August 8, 2024
Two cold regions in the U.S. are getting a massive infusion of funds to swap fossil-fueled furnaces, boilers and water heaters for heat pumps. The initiatives—one based in New England, the other in Alaska—were among the 25 projects selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a share of $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants. Read more

A team of researchers from Nagoya University in Japan has developed a loop heat pipe that can transport up to 10 kW of heat without the need for electricity. The findings are detailed in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. This heat transport capability is the largest in the world,  and with this technology, the researchers aim to contribute to energy savings and carbon neutrality in various fields, including industrial waste heat recovery, solar heat utilization, electric vehicle thermal management, and data center cooling. Read more
In a new study published in Energy Research & Social Science, a group of researchers from the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University found that using an indoor fireplace can result in the release of harmful particles that can be dispersed in the air and cause health problems when inhaled. Some particles can settle in the lungs, while others can enter the bloodstream. Read more

In Case You Missed It
Researchers at Georgia Tech are developing more efficient heating systems that don't rely on fossil fuels. The research was presented in an article titled "Thermochemical energy storage using salt mixtures with improved hydration kinetics and cycling stability," published in the Journal of Energy Storage that showed that combining two commonly found salts could help store clean energy as heat, and had the potential to heat buildings or be integrated with a heat pump to cool buildings. Read more
