Each update to ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 has lowered the threshold at which exhaust air energy recovery (EAER) is required in connection with outdoor air systems. In some instances, conventional EAER may not be practical, either because the exhaust air is dirty, or there isn’t enough exhaust air, or the exhaust airstream is too far away from the outdoor airstream. This article reviews Standard 90.1 requirements for hydronic series energy recovery, provides practical guidance on equipment selection and reports on measured performance. Read more

Design and operations of data center cooling systems are vital components to ensuring the reliable operation of information technology equipment. Cooling systems for data centers also need to be energy efficient and comply with applicable energy codes. This column examines several air-cooled chiller systems and their ability to comply with the mechanical load component of the IECC 2021 in a hot climate. Read more

The objectives were clearly expressed: to design an efficient house that would offer occupants an environment with thermal, visual and acoustical comfort, high indoor air quality and energy efficiency, within a defined construction and life-cycle budget. This 2,400 ft2 (223 m2) net positive house project also had the objective to minimize embodied carbon and be net zero or have net positive energy. The design criteria was not to meet the minimum code performance, but rather to design a house that would be in accordance with the codes at its midlife, which was chosen to be 25 years. Read more
