Shaping Tomorrow's Built Environment Today

Computer vision, machine learning and generative AI are poised to reshape the built environment, responding to changing conditions on job sites. In the construction industry, AI innovation can be seen in new robotics, 2-D and 3-D modeling, drone-guided roofing and more, turning AI from a novelty into a valuable asset that is in high demand. "For construction technology, the trifecta of computer vision, machine learning and generative AI is really going to reshape the built environment, because AI is going to power dynamic predictions that respond to all the different changing conditions on a job site,” said Wyatt Jenkins, chief product officer at Santa Barbara-based contech giant Procore. The push for sustainability innovations in construction and in the overall built environment in the Middle East may result in countries meeting more than 50% of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goals. This push would include a successful transition to decentralized renewable energy, low carbon transportation models and offset schemes to account for remaining emissions. Read more
 
 
The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) announced last week that CORE X Gulfport, a subsidiary of CORE X Partners, will establish cold storage operations at the Port of Gulfport in Louisiana. Officials said the 150,000 ft2 facility will serve food producers and manufacturers throughout the region. The project is located two miles from the port’s main entrance and is worth $73 million. The MDA said this is the first investment in cold storage infrastructure since Hurricane Katrina. Read more
The Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technologies Office announced $31M in funding to support projects addressing downhole cement and casing evaluation tools in high-temperature and hostile geothermal wellbores, as well as funding supporting projects addressing low-temperature reservoir thermal energy storage technology with industrial applications. Read more

An international research team developed a novel radiative cooling approach, dubbed v-PV, that employs two 45-degree inclined mirrors on two sides of a photovoltaic (PV) module. Solar irradiance collection efficiency was enhanced by 15% compared to an aligned, horizontal PV module. The front mirror allows for incident sunlight to reflect on the module, and on the back, a spectral reflector directs thermal radiation to the sky, preventing the module from heating up by scattered sunlight. Read more
