An advanced geothermal project has begun pumping carbon-free electricity onto the Nevada grid to power Google data centers there, Google announced. The International Energy Agency has long projected that geothermal could be a serious solution to climate change. It said in a 2011 roadmap document that geothermal could reach some 3.5% of global electricity generation annually by 2050, avoiding almost 800 megatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Higher temperatures are already affecting the decision-making of almost 70% of travelers who say they are now reconsidering where they would traditionally go, according to a recent report by Marriott Bonvoy with The Future Laboratory. Analyzing the plans of 14,000 travelers across the continent and the Middle East for the next three years, a quarter are already planning to travel at different times of year with almost a third considering cooler destinations to swerve the extremes. Read more
data centersWith the supply of floor space dwindling further and increased demand for colocation services, analysts are reporting a 15% increase in the asking rates at North American data centers compared to a year ago. DatacenterHawk in its third-quarter Data Center Market Recap found that data centers added more than 1.4 GW of power worldwide. Roughly 650 MW of that came from the United States, where major markets such as Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas, and Northern Virginia led the way. Read more

Recently, lawmakers announced the filing of a bill that calls for every state prison in Florida to provide "a portable air conditioner or air-cooling system." Currently, most of Florida's state prisons do not have air conditioning. Bill sponsor, Rep. Angie Nixon, said it's about safety. Read more
