The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is holding a hybrid scoping meeting online and in Washington D.C. on October 24 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST) to bring together building owners, researchers, policy makers, technology developers, engineers, designers, public health professionals and other stakeholders to discuss interest in forming a National Academies Roundtable on Health in Buildings. The aim of the roundtable is to identify and discuss priority issues, research, and best practices regarding health-enhancing strategies and technologies in the planning, design and management of buildings and the built environment. Embodied Carbon and Operational Energy were the focus of the 2023 ASHRAE Building Performance Analysis Conference held recently in Austin, Texas. The theme of the conference “Holistic Building Analysis: Linking Operational Energy, Embodied Carbon and Comfort” centered on a comprehensive approach of evaluating and designing buildings. The two-and-a-half-day conference draws 240 building industry professionals, including keynotes, paper sessions, seminars, vendor demonstrations, panel discussions and debates from more than 90 presenters. On September 27, ASHRAE Treasurer and Central Pennsylvania Chapter member Bill McQuade testified virtually before the New York City Council’s Committee on Health regarding four proposed Indoor Air Quality bills. These bills propose establishing standards and reporting requirements for indoor air quality (IAQ) in city buildings and school buildings, as well as pilot programs to monitor indoor air quality in certain commercial and residential buildings. The testimony suggested that the bills should refer to ASHRAE Standards 62.1 and 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality for commercial and residential buildings, as well as ASHRAE Standard 241, Control of Infectious Aerosols.
