Steam Boilers – Control and Condition (Daniel Wells, Spirax Sarco)

The Autumn season of talks kicked off with an absorbing presentation by Daniel Wells of Spirax Sarco at the Berkeley Centre, Cork Institute of Technology.

Following an introduction by Michael Dawkins, Chapter President, Daniel started the presentation with an explanation about the different types of steam boilers and generators and the regulatory framework governing boiler house system design and operation. The topic of boiler water level control was illustrated to great effect by a video documentary filmed within the boiler shell showing the effect of poor level control, sudden load increase, high TDS, water carry over etc.

Boiler blowdown, heat recovery and feed water conditioning were discussed in detail and the design of boilerhouse systems including trapping, strainers, correct steam and condensate take-offs and pipe sizing was highlighted. Finally, Daniel talked about the different grades of steam focussing on clean and pure steam used extensively in the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Methods of generation, design aspects of distribution and areas of application were discussed in detail. The evening was rounded off with a Q&A session.
