CIT Event focuses on Facility Management and BIM Integration

By Adam O\’Donovan

The first of our regional technical seminars took place in Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) on the 20th of October 2016. The seminar which was kindly sponsored by the Messo Research Group (http://messo.cit.ie/) at CIT attracted a great degree of interest from both industry and academia, with over 40 attendees. The seminar focused on improving operational energy efficiency with facilities management (FM) through the optimisation of building control systems, using ice storage techniques, as well as conveying how Building Information Modeling (BIM) could contribute to FM. The agenda included talks from, Pieter Vereycken (Baltimore Aircoil), Michal Otreba (BIM Coordinator RPS) and Pat Mehigan (UCC).

Following a welcome address by the Head of School of Mechanical and Process Engineering Dr Matt Cotterell, Mr. Vereycken began presentations withOptimising system energy performance with Ice Thermal Storage. During this presentation, he spoke of the potential for energy and cost savings through the use of innovative ice storage systems with applications and examples from a variety of climates.  Initially highlighting that BIM is relatively new in Ireland, Dr. Otreba presented BIM for FMwhere he spoke about how BIM can aid FM processes using a typical example of information that could aid effective facilities management. Speaking about his experiences as the facilities manager in Tyndall and UCC in his talk FM and BMS optimisation for energy efficiency Mr. Mehigan maintained that a holistic approach, taking into account the plant, the process and the behaviour of people, is important in achieving energy savings in facilities.
