On Thursday 4th February, Prof. William Bahnfleth returned to the ASHRAE Ireland Chapter to give a timely update on ‘Evolving HVAC Guidance for Airborne Infection Control – Current Status and Future Directions’. The seminar which you can watch in full below, covered a brief history of research and key findings since the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic, an update on current guidance, as well as a look ahead towards the future evolution of airborne inflection control in buildings.
Background: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, ASHRAE and the Epidemic Task Force (ETF) has been at the forefront of industry in providing technical guidance for the management of HVAC systems for airborne infection control. Over the past year, our understanding of viral transmission has evolved, and with it, the guidance for HVAC is changing also. ASHRAE Ireland Chapter are delighted to welcome back Prof. Bill Bahnfleth to provide an overview of current ASHRAE guidance, and compare how it relates to CIBSE, REHVA, AIVC and others. The seminar will also look towards future directions, and where further developments are required, such as the need to consider characteristics of varying pathogens.

About the Speaker: William P. Bahnfleth is a professor of architectural engineering at Penn State University and is a fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). His research interests cover a wide variety of indoor environmental control topics including chilled water pumping systems, stratified thermal energy storage, protection of building occupants from indoor bioaerosol releases, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems, and others. He is the author or co-author of more than 170 technical papers and articles and 14 books and book chapters. Professor Bahnfleth currently serves as chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force.
